Did you know Google uses over 200 factors when determining where any given website should be ranked? Some of these factors include site health & speed, number of outbound links from other sites, and length of time the website has been live. SEO is the process of working with these factors to improve a website’s quality and rank for keywords relative to the site.
SEO can take months before the efforts begin to make a real impact. As a result, many companies focus more on advertising since the results are much quicker. We believe a well-rounded digital marketing strategy should include both SEO and paid ads when the goal is to grow a website and increase traffic.
To better simplify, SEO can be broken down into 3 main categories; on-site, technical, and off-site. The domain authority of any given website is contingent with the health and effort put into these 3 categories.
On-site SEO refers to all the activities on the backend of the website to ensure that each page meets search engine standards. For instance, one requirement is to include inbound and outbound links on each page.
Technical SEO focuses on the search engine requirements that can’t necessarily be changed within the site copy. For instance, a technical SEO requirement is to have a sitemap integrated into the website to ensure search engines are able to index.
Off-site SEO pertains to any requirements that are met from outside of the website. For example, search engines love to see backlinks from great websites directing to your website. Backlinks can be considered a form of a digital reference in a way.
Link building is a term used in the SEO world to describe increasing the number of links that direct to the target website. No 2 links are created equal. The impact that a backlink has to the website is contingent upon the ranking of the website the link lives on.
Some examples of great websites to get links to your website are Wikipedia, Forbes, College & University websites (.edu), and well known nonprofit organizations (.org.)
Backlinks can also be harmful for a website’s SEO. If Google marks the backlink to be spam, a website can be penalized and rank lower than before. A strong link building strategy is imperitive to achieve high rankings.
